dbt Goes Native on Snowflake
dbt is deepening its platform integration with Snowflake, launching a new native application that runs directly inside the Snowflake UI. The company also previewed dbt Insights, a new interface for data exploration, aiming to streamline workflows between data engineering and business stakeholders.
This integration runs dbt Core transformations directly on Snowflake compute, eliminating the need for external orchestration tools, VMs, or containers. Data engineers can now use Snowflake's native task scheduling, logging, and access control, significantly reducing infrastructure management and DevOps overhead. The app, available on the Snowflake Marketplace, provides access to dbt Cloud's data discovery tools directly within the Snowflake UI. This includes dbt Explorer for visualizing column-level lineage and a beta chatbot, "Ask dbt," which leverages the dbt Semantic Layer and Snowflake Cortex AI to answer natural language questions. Architecturally, the application is built on the Snowflake Native App Framework and utilizes Snowpark Container Services to run its backend inside the data platform. This ensures that customer data never leaves the Snowflake security perimeter, a critical consideration for governance in regulated industries like insurance. The new dbt Insights interface further bridges the gap between engineering and business teams by offering an AI-powered environment for data exploration. It uses a feature called dbt Copilot to translate natural language questions into SQL, allowing analysts to query, visualize, and share findings without deep technical expertise. This move reflects a broader "rebundling" trend within the modern data stack, as described by dbt Labs CEO Tristan Handy. After a period of using many separate "best-of-breed" tools, the industry is now seeing a consolidation of capabilities around major data warehouse platforms. The deepened integration builds on a multi-year strategic partnership that has seen dbt Labs repeatedly named a Snowflake Partner of the Year. Customers can now use their existing Snowflake-committed spend to purchase dbt Cloud directly through the marketplace, streamlining procurement.
