Caltrans will cut northbound Interstate 405 to three lanes through the Sepulveda Pass for the weekend of May 1-4. (dot.ca.gov) The lane reduction starts at 10 p.m. Friday, May 1, and ends at 5 a.m. Monday, May 4. Southbound 405 traffic is not part of this weekend’s lane reduction. (dot.ca.gov) The narrowed stretch runs between Skirball Center Drive and Ventura Boulevard. Caltrans also plans to close the Skirball Center Drive on-ramp to northbound 405 and the northbound Getty Center Drive off-ramp. (dot.ca.gov) (nbclosangeles.com) Caltrans is steering drivers to Sepulveda Boulevard and the Greenleaf/Ventura Boulevard on-ramp as the main detour for northbound trips. The agency said the schedule can still change for weather or operational reasons. (dot.ca.gov) This is one weekend in a longer construction campaign on the pass. Caltrans said the May 1-4 closure is not the full May schedule and listed another extended reduction for May 15-18. (dot.ca.gov) The broader job is the Interstate 405 Sepulveda Pass Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which covers 10.2 miles between Van Nuys and Westwood. The state says it will replace sections of two lanes in each direction from Victory Boulevard to Mulholland Drive and repair other lanes across nearly 92 lane miles. (dot.ca.gov) Caltrans priced the project at about $143.7 million and said construction started in summer 2025. The agency’s current schedule calls for completion in winter 2027, with plant establishment continuing into 2028. (dot.ca.gov) For drivers, the immediate change is simpler: northbound 405 capacity through one of Los Angeles’ busiest choke points will be cut in half for most of next weekend. Caltrans is urging motorists to avoid the pass if possible and check current conditions before heading out. (dot.ca.gov 1) (dot.ca.gov 2)
