LA Police Pursuit Ends With Suspect Crashing into Cruisers

A police pursuit in Los Angeles that began after a driver ran a red light ended when the suspect crashed into multiple LAPD cruisers. The event caused significant local traffic disruptions and a heavy police presence in the area.

Police pursuits in Los Angeles are a frequent occurrence, with the LAPD initiating 1,116 chases in 2024 alone. A significant number of these pursuits, about 32%, ended in a traffic collision. The primary reasons for initiating these pursuits often involve stolen vehicles, suspected DUI, and reckless driving. From early 2018 to the spring of 2023, the LAPD engaged in 4,203 vehicle pursuits. During this five-year window, these chases resulted in 1,592 collisions, highlighting the inherent risks involved. The majority of these pursuits are relatively short, with an average duration of just over five minutes. A report analyzing LAPD pursuit data over a five-year period found that 38% of all chases resulted in a collision. These crashes have led to a significant number of injuries and, in some cases, fatalities. The data showed that third-party bystanders often suffer the most severe consequences. Between January 2018 and March 2023, collisions resulting from LAPD pursuits caused 1,032 instances of injury or death. This figure includes injuries to suspects, police officers, and uninvolved civilians. Specifically, 60 LAPD officers were injured in these incidents over the five-year span. The LAPD's policy allows officers to pursue suspects for felonies and misdemeanors, including traffic violations like running a red light, if there is reasonable suspicion of a crime. Officers must use a "balance test" to continuously weigh the necessity of the chase against the potential danger to the public. Supervisors are tasked with overseeing pursuits and have the authority to terminate them if the risks become too high.
