China Orders Nationwide Fireworks Safety Inspection

Following the conclusion of Spring Festival celebrations, the Chinese government has ordered a nationwide safety inspection of fireworks. The initiative is designed to prevent accidents by enforcing stricter safety standards. Authorities will inspect all parts of the supply chain, including production, storage, transportation, and sales.

- The order follows at least two fatal incidents during the recent Lunar New Year holiday. An explosion at a fireworks shop in Hubei province on February 18, 2026, killed 12 people, just days after a separate blast at a shop in Jiangsu province killed eight and injured two. - Among the 12 fatalities in the Hubei explosion were five children. The victims, aside from the shop's proprietor, were all customers purchasing fireworks, including a family that had traveled approximately 780 kilometers to visit relatives for the holiday. - Just a day before the deadlier Hubei incident, China's Ministry of Emergency Management had already issued a warning, stating that "fireworks are still the biggest risks during the Spring Festival period." - The inspection drive revisits a long-standing challenge of regulating a major industry. The State Council implemented the "Regulations on the Safety Administration of Fireworks and Firecrackers" in 2006 to strengthen safety management across the country. - While many major cities banned fireworks in recent years over safety and pollution concerns, some have recently lifted outright bans in favor of controlled management, allowing sales and use in limited times and places. - The move impacts a globally significant industry; China is the world's largest fireworks exporter, historically accounting for the vast majority of global export sales. - Stricter regulations in recent years have already put pressure on the industry, leading to factory closures and declining domestic sales even as international demand continues.
