Vietnamese Carriers Place Large Boeing Orders
Vietnamese air carriers have announced orders for billions of dollars worth of Boeing aircraft. The announcement coincided with a U.S. visit by Vietnam's Communist Party chief, To Lam, and is reportedly part of an effort to secure a favorable trade deal with the current U.S. administration.
- National carrier Vietnam Airlines finalized an order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, a deal valued at approximately $8.1 billion. This marks the airline's first direct purchase of Boeing narrow-body jets. - The low-cost carrier Vietjet secured a financing agreement with U.S.-based Griffin Global Asset Management for six Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets, valued at around $965 million. This is part of a larger order for 200 737 MAX aircraft by the Vietjet Group. - New luxury airline Sun PhuQuoc Airways also announced a significant order for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with a total value of $22.5 billion, aimed at developing an intercontinental network. - The flurry of aviation agreements, totaling over $30 billion, coincided with discussions around a U.S.-Vietnam trade framework. In early February 2026, Vietnam had expressed its willingness to increase imports of American goods. - These deals are set against the backdrop of rapid growth in Vietnam's aviation market, which is projected to be the fastest-growing in Southeast Asia. Passenger traffic is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.2% between 2026 and 2032. - The aircraft orders are a key component of the airlines' fleet modernization and expansion strategies. Vietnam Airlines aims to expand its fleet to around 151 aircraft by 2030 and is also in discussions with Boeing for an additional 30 widebody aircraft. - Historically, Boeing's relationship with Vietnam's aviation sector dates back to 1995. A landmark deal under the U.S.-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement was Vietnam Airlines' purchase of four Boeing 777-200ERs in 2001. - Other Vietnamese carriers have also made significant Boeing orders in the past, including a 2019 commitment from Bamboo Airways for 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners valued at $3 billion.
