Village Cafe Celebrates 30 Years

Siesta Key's Village Cafe remains a cornerstone after nearly 30 years, known for sweet potato pancakes, apple-stuffed French toast, and friendly staff serving locals and visitors. The breakfast and lunch spot exemplifies the relaxed, community-focused dining the area is known for.

Family-owned and operated since 1995, the Village Cafe was established by the Kouvatsos family and has become a fixture in the heart of Siesta Key Village. For 14 years, regulars were greeted by co-owner Tom Kouvatsos' father, Alex, a Greek immigrant and retired restaurateur who became the cafe's unofficial maître d'. Known affectionately as "Papou," Alex Kouvatsos ran as many as eight Greek restaurants in New York before joining his son's "half-day" breakfast and lunch spot in 2008. He worked seven days a week and was an original vendor at the Siesta Key Farmers Market, selling sandwiches and spinach pie until his passing in late 2022. Beyond the well-known pancakes, the menu features a "Greek Omelette" with feta cheese and a "Mexican Wrap" with chorizo and refried beans. Other popular "Eggseptional Dishes" include the Siesta Benedict and a variety of frittatas. The cafe, with its 99-seat capacity and two large patios, is a prominent people-watching spot at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Avenida Madera. Owners Tom and Kay Kouvatsos have navigated community challenges, including the economic impact of hurricanes, where they retained all of their staff with the help of generous customers.
