Anthropic's $30B Funding Round
AI company Anthropic is reportedly in the process of a $30 billion Series G funding round at a $380 billion valuation, co-led by GIC and Coatue. The deal underscores the intense investor appetite for foundational AI platforms. This massive raise occurs even as the broader SaaS sector has suffered its worst non-recession slump in three decades, with public software companies seeing significant value compression.
- The company was founded in 2021 by seven former senior members of OpenAI, including CEO Dario Amodei, who was OpenAI's VP of Research, and his sister Daniela Amodei, who was VP of Safety. They left due to differences in opinion regarding AI safety. - Prior to this round, Anthropic had already secured significant backing from major tech companies, including an $8 billion investment from Amazon and over $2 billion from Google. These deals also made Amazon Web Services (AWS) its primary cloud provider for training and deploying its models. - The company's annualized revenue has reached $14 billion, growing more than 10x in each of the last three years. The number of customers paying over $100,000 annually has increased sevenfold in the past year, with over 500 customers now spending more than $1 million annually. - A key revenue driver is Claude Code, an AI tool for developers, which has surpassed $2.5 billion in annualized revenue and has seen its business subscriptions quadruple this year. - Anthropic is heavily targeting enterprise adoption with its Claude models being used for software development, recruitment, and marketing to optimize content creation and campaign management. The company is expanding its global enterprise support staff fivefold to service its 300,000 business customers. - This $30 billion raise is the second-largest private venture funding deal of all time, surpassed only by rival OpenAI's $40 billion round in 2025. OpenAI is reportedly assembling a much larger round of up to $100 billion that would value it at about $830 billion. - As a point of differentiation, Anthropic is structured as a public benefit corporation (PBC) to signal that profit is not its only priority and has emphasized a safety-first approach to AI development. The company recently ran Super Bowl ads highlighting that its products will remain ad-free, a subtle jab at OpenAI's introduction of ads to ChatGPT.
