Gabriel Kreuther Opens First NYC Spot in Decade

Two-Michelin-star chef Gabriel Kreuther launched Saverne in NYC—his first new restaurant in over a decade. The chef notably lacks a Wikipedia page despite his superstar status, sparking praise for his unassuming approach. Saverne is already generating buzz for Kreuther's signature refined technique and understated presentation style.

Before opening his celebrated eponymous restaurant, Gabriel Kreuther helmed the kitchen at The Modern for nearly a decade, earning a Michelin star and a James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York City in 2009. His culinary journey in the U.S. also included stints at La Caravelle and as Chef De Cuisine at Atelier. His first solo venture, Gabriel Kreuther, opened in 2015 and quickly garnered critical acclaim, earning its first Michelin star the same year. By 2019, the restaurant had been elevated to two Michelin stars, a distinction it has maintained since. The restaurant is also a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association. Saverne, named for a town in Kreuther's native Alsace region of France, is a modern brasserie centered around a wood-fired grill. The concept marks a return to his roots, with a focus on rustic, smoky flavors and dishes like tarte flambée, spätzle, and wood-grilled meats and seafood. The new restaurant is located in the Spiral, a 66-story skyscraper in Hudson Yards. The 5,000-square-foot space seats 145 and features an open kitchen to showcase the wood-fired ovens and grills. This is Kreuther's first new restaurant in the 11 years since opening his two-Michelin-star establishment. The Alsatian chef is known for a low-profile, head-down approach, which may explain why he personally lacks a Wikipedia page, while his restaurant has one. He is also a dedicated mentor for the Bocuse d'Or USA Culinary Council, helping lead Team USA to a gold medal win in 2017.
