Dutch forecasters are warning that a cooler turn could catch Meivakantie campers just as the holiday break begins and Koningsdag approaches on Monday, April 27. (knmi.nl) (nu.nl) The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, or KNMI, said on April 19 that maximum temperatures are expected to slip below the long-term average later this week, with a 50% to 60% chance of below-normal temperatures from April 26 through May 3. (knmi.nl) An earlier KNMI outlook published April 17 was sharper, putting the chance of a “fairly cool and slightly changeable” pattern at 70% to 80% for April 24 through May 1. Its day-by-day forecast also showed overnight lows of 3 degrees Celsius on April 21 and 2 degrees on April 22. (knmi.nl) That shift follows a warmer start to the school break. NU.nl reported on April 15 that many parts of the Netherlands were still seeing 15 to 20 degrees before the wind turned and cooler air moved in after the weekend. (nu.nl) The timing matters because the Dutch meivakantie for the 2025-2026 school year runs from April 25 to May 3, with some schools extending it by a week, and Koningsdag is a national holiday on April 27. Those dates put family trips, campsites and outdoor street events in the same colder window flagged by forecasters. (government.nl) (rijksoverheid.nl) (government.nl) KNMI did not issue a national weather warning with its April 19 forecast. It said Tuesday and Wednesday should be dry with sunny spells, before cloud cover increases and daytime highs ease back under the seasonal norm. (knmi.nl) For campers, the practical risk is less a storm than a cold campsite: Dutch spring weather can still drop close to freezing inland at night even when afternoons stay in the teens. KNMI’s latest national forecast listed lows of 3 to 6 degrees and highs of 14 to 18 degrees through April 25. (knmi.nl) The forecast for Koningsdag itself is still not locked in. Weeronline’s event page said a specific outlook for April 27 was not yet available, even as it noted Doetinchem, the royal visit host city this year, typically averages about 14 degrees in late April. (weeronline.nl) The near-term message from Dutch forecasters is narrower than a washout warning: warm holiday-opening weather is giving way to cooler days, chilly nights and a more changeable stretch just as tents go up across the country.
