OpenAI Makes Big Multi-Cloud Play on AWS

OpenAI is no longer just a Microsoft shop, launching 'stateful AI' natively on AWS. This new 'control plane' allows developers to deploy OpenAI models with persistent context across sessions, a major upgrade for building complex, memory-intensive agentic workflows. In a parallel move, Amazon has committed $50 billion to a strategic partnership with OpenAI, cementing the alliance.

This expanded partnership adds a staggering $100 billion over eight years to an existing $38 billion deal between OpenAI and AWS. As part of the agreement, AWS becomes the exclusive third-party cloud distributor for a new enterprise platform called OpenAI Frontier, which is designed for building and managing teams of AI agents. A key part of the deal involves OpenAI committing to use 2 gigawatts of capacity on Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips. This is a major endorsement of AWS's in-house silicon, signaling a move to diversify the hardware powering AI's most advanced workloads beyond the usual suspects like NVIDIA. The collaboration will also see the two companies develop customized models to be used within Amazon's own applications. The new "stateful" environment on Amazon Bedrock is a significant technical leap from the "stateless" API calls developers are used to. Stateless models are like having a conversation with someone with no memory—each interaction is a blank slate. Stateful AI, however, provides a persistent working memory, allowing agents to track context, remember previous steps, and manage complex workflows across different tools without developers needing to build custom memory layers. This move doesn't end OpenAI's deep ties with Microsoft. In a carefully structured deal, Microsoft Azure will remain the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI's *stateless* APIs. This allows OpenAI to establish a completely new category of service on AWS, effectively creating a multi-cloud strategy where both tech giants can claim a unique and exclusive piece of the partnership. The alliance with OpenAI isn't Amazon's only major AI play. The company has also invested a total of $8 billion in Anthropic, a direct competitor to OpenAI. Anthropic also uses AWS as its primary cloud provider and plans to use Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia chips to train its future models, creating a fascinating competitive dynamic within Amazon's own cloud ecosystem. The $50 billion from Amazon is part of a larger $110 billion funding round for OpenAI that includes major players like SoftBank and NVIDIA. This massive influx of capital brings OpenAI's pre-money valuation to an eye-watering $730 billion, cementing its position as the dominant player in the AI landscape.
