F3 Tech to Lead Maryland Biomanufacturing Proposal

Maryland-based F3 Tech is set to lead a proposal for a new Maryland BioMADE biomanufacturing facility. The initiative builds on existing investment in next-generation manufacturing and bio-innovation in the state. The proposal signals continued growth in Maryland's biotech and advanced manufacturing sectors.

- The proposed $40 million multi-user biomanufacturing facility is a collaboration between F3 Tech and the Maryland Department of Commerce, aimed at securing Maryland's role in the next phase of U.S. bioindustrial manufacturing. - This initiative is part of the federal BioMADE (Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem) program, which was launched by the U.S. Department of Defense in 2020 to accelerate biomanufacturing innovation and strengthen domestic supply chains. - F3 Tech, a program of the Easton-based nonprofit Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center, is tasked with identifying an industry anchor and forming a coalition of partners to develop the site, operating model, and long-term plan. - The facility aims to lower barriers for companies developing new bioindustrial technologies by providing shared access to infrastructure, which is a national trend to support early-stage and scaling companies. - Maryland's bioscience industry has seen a 14% increase in employment since 2018, reaching nearly 50,000 jobs across over 3,100 business establishments, making it 38% more concentrated than the national average. - The state's life sciences sector is a national leader, with the Washington, D.C.–Baltimore area ranking third for research and development talent and sixth for manufacturing talent. - This proposal aligns with other state initiatives to boost advanced manufacturing, such as the Maryland MADE 4.0 grant program, which helps manufacturers adopt smart technologies and improve energy efficiency. - A key goal of the proposal is to enhance collaboration with federal research assets, such as the USDA's Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, to improve regulatory engagement with emerging technologies.
