Downtown San Jose Farmers' Market Opens

The Downtown San Jose Farmers’ Market is set to kick off its season tomorrow, March 4. The market will run on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., offering a midweek option for fresh produce and artisanal goods just a short drive from Fremont.

After a three-year break, the Downtown San Jose Farmers' Market is relaunching at a new location. It will now be held at the Hammer Theatre Plaza on Paseo de San Antonio, a spot chosen for its high foot traffic from nearby San Jose State University and downtown offices. The market is operated by the Regional Farmers' Market Association, which also runs markets in Cupertino and El Cerrito. The market is intentionally smaller for its relaunch, focusing on providing a midweek fresh food source. Shoppers can expect to find produce from farms like Nuno Family Farm, Castellanos Farm, and the organic Ken's Top Notch. Other vendors will offer items such as eggs, strawberries, and hydroponic microgreens. For those looking for ready-to-eat options or artisanal products, the market will feature a variety of vendors. Hot food options include tamales, vegan empanadas, dumplings, and Thai street food. Packaged goods will be available from vendors like California Bakeshop, Brother's Products S.F. (offering hummus and yogurt), and Mango Blossom Apiary with local honey. For Fremont homemakers, this Wednesday market provides another option for fresh, local goods. Other nearby markets operate on different days, allowing for a variety of shopping opportunities throughout the week. Fremont itself hosts several year-round farmers' markets, including the Kaiser Fremont Farmers' Market on Thursdays and the Niles and Irvington markets on Saturdays and Sundays, respectively. The Downtown San Jose market is approved to accept CalFresh EBT and participates in the Market Match program. This program allows shoppers using CalFresh to double their food dollars, receiving up to an additional $15 to spend on fruits and vegetables. With the start of the spring season, shoppers at Bay Area farmers' markets can expect to find an abundance of certain produce. Look for artichokes, asparagus, peas, and various greens. As the season progresses, strawberries and cherries will also become readily available, offering great options for seasonal meal planning.
