New Farm-to-Table Restaurant Opens in San Jose

Poppy & Claro, a new farm-to-table restaurant, opened in downtown San Jose. The eatery features a communal table uniquely carved in the shape of California.

Poppy & Claro is the first restaurant venture from the Jay Paul Company, a real estate developer, and is located at 50 W. San Fernando St., in the 50 West building. The location is near the San Jose Museum of Art and the Circle of Palms. The restaurant's design, by Cass Calder Smith, features California contemporary elements, including artwork by state artisans, sky blue and poppy orange colors, and wood detailing. The communal table is carved in the shape of California from local claro walnut. "Claro" refers to a species of Northern California black walnut tree, and walnuts are incorporated into several dishes. The menu features Northern California-sourced dishes that change seasonally. It includes breakfast items such as the Morning Smash Sando and Claro Granola Parfait, with pastries from Manresa Bread. Lunch and dinner options range from Dijon Dill Seared Salmon to NY Strip Frites. Vegan options such as "Claro cauli" and "Roasted beet & hummus bowl" are also available. Downtown San Jose's dining scene is evolving, with new restaurants aiming to elevate the culinary bar. Current trends in the restaurant world include intentional dining, local sourcing, and personal hospitality.
