Google.org Launches $30M AI Science Fund

Google.org has launched a $30 million fund to support AI-driven scientific research in health and climate. The initiative will provide grants ranging from $500,000 to $3 million, along with accelerator support, to organizations globally.

- This initiative follows a previous $20 million Google.org "AI for Science" fund, which supported 12 projects in life sciences, agriculture, and sustainability across Europe, North America, and Africa. - Selected organizations will gain access to a six-month Google.org Accelerator program, offering pro bono technical support from Google experts and engineers, along with Google Cloud credits to support their projects. - The application review process involves Google.org staff, Google subject matter experts, and external specialists from partner organizations, including Renaissance Philanthropy and the Centre for Public Impact. - Projects must align with Google's Responsible AI Principles and are required to be shared via open-source licensing to ensure public benefit. - This fund is part of a broader European trend of increasing AI adoption in the public sector; by 2024, over a third of EU public administrations reported using AI, with Northern and Western Europe leading implementation. - In Portugal, a European Commission-funded project is underway to enhance civic participation using emerging technologies like AI, involving ecosystem mapping of public, private, research, and civil society stakeholders. - The European Union's Interoperable Europe Act, which came into force in April 2024, promotes interregional cooperation through GovTech solutions, supported by initiatives like the GovTech4All project. - Public sector digital services in Europe are increasingly mandated to meet accessibility standards, with the European Accessibility Act requiring most websites and apps to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA by 2025.
