The HomePod 2 can function as a Matter controller and Thread border router, allowing devices like blinds and Nanoleaf Essentials to join the Thread network. Thread creates a self-healing mesh network, so if one device fails, data packets automatically find an alternative route. Adding more accessories expands the Thread network automatically. The HomePod 2's Thread network uses Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), unlike other standards such as Zigbee. This allows for better interoperability and future-proofing. As a smart home hub, the HomePod 2 can control HomeKit accessories and, with Matter, even more devices. All smart home communications are end-to-end encrypted for security. The HomePod 2 also has built-in temperature and humidity sensors that can trigger smart home automations.
