OpenAI memo shows partner shifts

Reports based on an OpenAI internal memo suggest the company feels its historic Microsoft relationship constrained its customer reach and that a newer alliance with Amazon is being positioned as a growth catalyst. OpenAI’s new sales chief told employees that Amazon is now a key route to corporate customers, while Microsoft had limited where OpenAI could sell. (cnbc.com) In a memo sent on Sunday, April 12, chief revenue officer Denise Dresser wrote that Microsoft had been “foundational” but had also limited OpenAI’s ability to meet enterprise customers on their preferred platforms. She pointed to Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services’ model marketplace, as the place many companies already buy artificial intelligence tools. (cnbc.com) That memo landed six weeks after OpenAI and Amazon announced a multi-year partnership on February 27. Amazon said it would invest $50 billion in OpenAI, provide 2 gigawatts of Trainium chip capacity, and become the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, the company’s platform for managing teams of artificial intelligence agents. OpenAI said last week that enterprise now makes up more than 40% of its revenue and is on track to reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026. Large companies often buy models through the cloud provider they already use, and Microsoft’s Azure and Amazon Web Services compete directly for those workloads. (openai.com) OpenAI and Microsoft had already loosened parts of their alliance before this memo surfaced. On January 21, 2025, Microsoft said new computing capacity would move from exclusivity to a right-of-first-refusal model, letting OpenAI build additional capacity outside Azure. Microsoft said in January 2025 that OpenAI’s application programming interface remained exclusive to Azure, and OpenAI said in October 2025 that Azure application programming interface exclusivity would continue while some non-application programming interface products could run on other clouds. Her memo shows that job now includes building distribution beyond the company’s original Microsoft pipeline.
