SmallRig + vivo mobile imaging tie-up

A recent social post flagged a partnership between SmallRig and vivo to create an integrated mobile imaging solution aimed at adaptable portable-device workflows. The announcement was framed around hardware integration that could be repurposed for on-the-go imaging setups rather than fixed-site scanners. (x.com)

SmallRig and vivo said on March 31 that they had built a joint mobile imaging system around vivo’s X300 Ultra, turning a flagship phone into a rigged video setup for creators. (prnewswire.com) The companies said the co-developed Pro Video Rig Kit debuted with the X300 Ultra and will be sold through vivo retail channels in China and Europe. SmallRig said the partnership itself began in 2023 and that the kit was previewed earlier this year at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. (prnewswire.com) (vivo.com) A phone rig is the metal frame and handle system that lets a handset carry add-ons like lights, microphones, filters, and storage, the way a camera body carries accessories. SmallRig’s current mobile kits use a quick-release cage, a wireless shutter handle, 67 millimeter magnetic filters, and optional solid-state drive storage for phone video capture. (smallrig.com) That matters because vivo has spent the past several product cycles pushing its phones deeper into camera territory with custom imaging chips, lens work with ZEISS, and software tuned for video and zoom. On its own materials, vivo says its imaging work spans optics, image processing, and algorithms aimed at bringing “professional-grade” tools to phones. (vivo.com 1) (vivo.com 2) The X300 Ultra is the hardware anchor for this push. vivo’s launch materials for the phone describe a three-camera rear system built around 14 millimeter, 35 millimeter, and 85 millimeter focal lengths, plus add-on telephoto extenders that reach 200 millimeter and 400 millimeter equivalents. (vivo.com) SmallRig said vivo used the pairing in a 13-camera setup for the X Series Spring Product Launch Event, with each unit built around an X300 Ultra and the Pro Video Rig Kit. The companies also said earlier versions had already been used for live events, variety shows, product launches, and documentary shoots. (prnewswire.com) The pitch is less about replacing a studio camera than about making a phone easier to hold, mount, power, and control in the field. SmallRig’s own product pages for comparable kits emphasize faster setup, wireless shutter control, and support for external storage during higher-end recording. (smallrig.com) vivo has not framed the partnership as a scanner or fixed-site system. Its March 3 announcement for Mobile World Congress said the X300 Ultra would be shown as part of a broader premium-device push, and the March 31 release with SmallRig focused on vlogging, live streaming, event broadcasting, and multi-camera production. (vivo.com) (prnewswire.com) What comes next is straightforward: the companies have moved the idea from trade-show preview to retail bundle, and they are testing whether more creators will buy a phone as part of a camera rig instead of using it bare.
