AI Copilots Arrive for Legacy Enterprise Software

AI assistants are increasingly being integrated into legacy enterprise software systems to modernize workflows. CRMIT Solutions has launched “Case InSights” on Salesforce AgentExchange, using generative AI for smarter customer service case management. Separately, Virgil AI has released an AI Sales Copilot specifically for SAP partners, designed to assist reps with insights and deal management.

- The AI copilot market is projected to grow significantly, with one forecast predicting an increase from $16.94 billion in 2025 to $56.43 billion in 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.1%. Another report estimates the market will reach $126.0 billion by 2035, growing from $14.4 billion in 2025. - Salesforce's Einstein Copilot is not a single tool but a suite of customizable AI capabilities embedded across its various cloud platforms. It uses natural language processing and predictive analytics to automate tasks like data entry and follow-ups, as well as provide predictive sales forecasts. The "Einstein Trust Layer" is a key feature designed to ensure data privacy and security by masking personally identifiable information and preventing LLM partners from retaining sensitive data. - SAP's AI strategy focuses on embedding "Business AI" directly into its core enterprise resource planning (ERP) and other business process software. Its AI copilot, named Joule, is designed to understand business context and assist with tasks across finance, procurement, and HR, with SAP aiming to have over 400 AI scenarios available by the end of the year. - While AI copilots are being adopted for a variety of business functions, software development and customer service are currently the leading applications. In the European Union, marketing and sales are the most common uses for AI in the manufacturing, accommodation, and retail sectors. - The integration of generative AI is expected to increase the productivity of customer relationship management (CRM) users by 10 to 35 percent. AI can analyze customer data to personalize interactions, automate responses, and provide real-time suggestions to service agents. This allows employees to shift their focus from repetitive tasks to more strategic work. - The rise of AI copilots is expected to change the nature of sales roles, with a decreased need for "value communicators" who perform basic information gathering and scheduling. There will be a greater emphasis on "value creators" who can coach buyers through complex problems. Repetitive tasks like lead scoring and creating initial outreach content will be increasingly automated, allowing sales professionals to focus on building relationships and closing complex deals. - North America currently represents the largest market for AI sales copilots, accounting for $1.5 billion in revenue in 2024. However, the Asia-Pacific region is projected to have the fastest growth rate in the coming years due to rapid digitalization. - A significant challenge to the adoption of AI copilots in enterprises is the difficulty of integrating them with existing legacy systems. Other concerns include the high cost of vendor solutions, a lack of employee skills in AI, and data security.
