Bali's Annual Day of Silence

Planning a Bali trip this March? Note that on March 19, the Balinese New Year (Nyepi) shuts down the entire island for 24 hours Canada Warns Spring Breakers Of Scheduled Flight And Hotel Service Suspensions In Popular Beach Destination. Airports, hotels, and all public businesses will suspend services, requiring tourists to stay indoors.

Nyepi, also called the Day of Silence, has been celebrated in Bali since 78 A.D.. It marks the Balinese New Year based on the Saka calendar, a calendar influenced by ancient Indian Hindu traditions. The holiday is a spiritual reset where Balinese Hindus dedicate the day to self-reflection, fasting, and meditation. The Balinese believe that the rituals and prohibitions trick evil spirits into thinking the island is deserted, thus preventing bad luck in the coming year. Leading up to Nyepi, a series of elaborate rituals and ceremonies take place. One notable event is the Ogoh-Ogoh parade on the eve of Nyepi, where towering effigies of demons are paraded through the streets and then burned, symbolizing the purging of negativity. Another is Melasti, a purification ritual performed 3-4 days beforehand at the beach, where sacred objects are cleansed. The four main prohibitions (Catur Brata Penyepian) during Nyepi are: no fire or light (Amati Geni), no work (Amati Karya), no travel (Amati Lelunganan), and no entertainment (Amati Lelanguan). These are intended to create an environment for spiritual cleansing and restoring balance. The day after Nyepi is Ngembak Geni, which translates to “relighting the fire”. Families and friends visit one another to ask for forgiveness, mend relationships, and express gratitude. Nyepi also has a remarkable environmental impact. The lack of activity reduces pollution, allowing the island's ecosystems to rejuvenate. The night sky, free from light pollution, reveals a breathtaking view of the stars. Tourists can experience a unique side of Bali during Nyepi, but it's essential to respect the traditions. Hotels often scale back services, and visitors are required to stay within their accommodations. The airport is closed for the entire day.
