Bern's to Replace Haven with New Seafood Concept
The Bern's Steak House Group plans to close its Hyde Park restaurant, Haven, and replace it with a new seafood concept in 2027. The move marks a significant change for the prominent Tampa-based restaurant group.
- The new, yet-to-be-named seafood restaurant is a concept developed over several years by Haven's current executive chef, Chad Johnson, who will lead the new kitchen. Haven will continue to operate until the summer of 2026, with the new seafood establishment slated to open in the fall of 2027. - The location at 2208 W. Morrison Ave. was previously the site of another Bern's-owned restaurant called SideBern's, which opened in 1996. In 2015, the space was transformed into Haven, which shifted to a more casual, wine-bar-focused concept with an emphasis on charcuterie and cheese. - Haven was known for its robust cheese and charcuterie program, an edgy cocktail list, and a menu of small plates that pushed culinary boundaries. It garnered positive reviews and was recognized by the Michelin Guide for its shareable plates, artisanal cheeses, and whimsical desserts. - The Bern's Steak House Group is a family-owned business currently led by David Laxer, the son of founders Bern and Gert Laxer. The family's restaurant portfolio also includes the flagship Bern's Steak House and Élevage at the Epicurean Hotel. - The original Bern's Steak House was founded in 1956 after Bern and Gert Laxer purchased the Beer Haven Bar. To save money, they repurposed the letters from the "Beer Haven" sign to create the name "Bern's". - Bern's Steak House is internationally recognized for its massive wine collection, which contains over half a million bottles and more than 6,800 selections. It has been a recipient of Wine Spectator's Grand Award. - The parent company has not yet released the name of the new seafood restaurant, specific menu details beyond the seafood focus, or information on whether the current space will undergo a complete redesign.
