Glen Canyon Quicksand Warning

NPS warns of quicksand hazards at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (AZ/UT), especially near shorelines — heed posted alerts National Park Service alerts Glen Canyon visitors of quicksand hazard.

Quicksand is more likely to be found in areas where the ground is saturated with water, such as near the shores of Lake Powell. These areas can appear solid but are actually a suspension of sand and water that can trap unsuspecting visitors. The National Park Service advises visitors to avoid walking in areas that look like quicksand and to heed posted warnings. If you do become trapped, the NPS recommends that you remain calm and spread your weight out over a larger area. Trying to step out of quicksand can make you sink faster; instead, slowly move toward solid ground. If you are unable to free yourself, call for help.
