WhatsApp Enhances Commerce Features

WhatsApp is testing a feature to display Status previews directly within the main Chats tab, which could boost visibility for vendor promotions. The company is also rolling out a refreshed user interface for its iOS Business app. These updates are aimed at improving the conversational commerce experience for small businesses and their customers.

- Meta's partnership with Reliance JioMart was a global first for an end-to-end shopping experience within WhatsApp, allowing users to browse, purchase, and pay for groceries without leaving the chat. This collaboration resulted in a 7x growth in monthly orders and a 6x month-on-month increase in new customer conversions for JioMart through the platform. - To facilitate in-app transactions, WhatsApp has integrated with multiple payment providers in India, including Razorpay and PayU, and supports all UPI apps. This allows businesses to accept payments directly within the chat via methods like credit/debit cards, net banking, and UPI without redirecting customers to an external website. - For larger businesses, Meta is testing a one-tap calling feature to connect customers with support for more complex inquiries, with plans to expand this to include voice and video calls for services like telehealth. This complements the existing communication tools and provides a richer customer service channel. - New advertising formats are being rolled out in India, including ads within the Status tab and promoted Channels, which are currently being tested by brands like Maruti Suzuki and Air India. Businesses can manage these campaigns across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram through a unified Ads Manager. - The WhatsApp Business API has been enhanced with features like "Flows" to create interactive forms for appointments or registrations, and "Carousel" to display up to 10 product images in a single message. These tools aim to make the in-app experience richer and more functional for commerce. - Meta is introducing AI-powered assistants for businesses on WhatsApp to handle common inquiries and provide faster customer support, with initial rollouts planned for India, Singapore, and Brazil. The company is also leveraging AI to help businesses create ads that target users with abandoned carts or offer discounts. - Industry data suggests that conversational commerce through platforms like WhatsApp can achieve significantly higher conversion rates (45-60%) compared to traditional e-commerce platforms (2-5%) in India. This is attributed to the personal and trusted nature of messaging apps.
