Airline Cuts Support Costs 70% With AI Chatbots

Mexican airline Volaris has achieved a 70% reduction in customer support costs by deploying AI chatbots for end-to-end automation. The system handles a high volume of queries from flight information to bookings, providing a case study on how conversational AI can deliver significant operational savings in customer-facing industries.

- The technology partner behind the Volaris chatbot is Verint, a company that helped the airline handle a 360% increase in customer interactions between 2020 and 2022 with only a 9% increase in support agents. - The chatbot, named Vane, operates on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, where it handles tasks like check-in, flight status queries, and finding reservation codes. Currently, 78% of all customer communications are completed through these messaging channels without human interaction. - Beyond cost savings, the automation resulted in a 91.61% reduction in first response time and increased customer satisfaction (CSAT) from 44% in 2020 to 79% in 2022. The system now resolves 85% of digital interactions in real-time. - This strategy reflects a broader airline industry trend, where carriers like KLM and Ryanair use bots to automate over 50% of social media queries, freeing up agents to handle complex issues. - In India, the opportunity lies in leveraging WhatsApp's high engagement, where businesses are seeing conversion rates of 45-60%, compared to 2-5% on traditional e-commerce websites. This is driven by message open rates that average 98%. - JioMart, in partnership with Haptik, was a pioneer in India, building a WhatsApp chatbot that allows users to browse products, order, and transact entirely within the chat interface. - For payments, WhatsApp's platform in India is built on UPI, allowing businesses to integrate payment gateways like Razorpay and PayU to send payment links or use UPI intent flows directly in the chat. - The cost to implement such a chatbot in India can range from ₹5,000–₹25,000 per month for a small business to over ₹3 lakh per month for more advanced, enterprise-level AI systems.
