Embedded Finance Faces Rising Operational Risk

The fintech sector is waking up to the huge operational risk in embedded finance as companies become dependent on third-party API rails for critical functions. To combat this, infrastructure providers like Griffin are building in agentic AI for compliance and fraud detection, aiming to create a more resilient and automated regulatory stack.

The reliance on stacked APIs from multiple vendors creates hidden points of failure; what appears as a single transaction to the user is a complex chain of handoffs for KYC, AML, card issuing, and settlement. A failure at any point in this chain can cause cascading disruptions, and because each vendor has limited visibility, debugging becomes a slow, fragmented process of coordinating between multiple parties. This distributed ecosystem amplifies third-party risk, as the lead bank is ultimately responsible for the compliance and security of the entire chain. Regulators are increasing their scrutiny, with agencies like the CFPB aiming to provide consumers of embedded products, such as "buy now, pay later," with protections equivalent to those for traditional credit card users. The upcoming PSD3 regulation, expected to take effect in 2026, is also set to tighten the rules for Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) providers. In response, firms are turning to agentic AI to automate and audit compliance workflows end-to-end. Unlike older AI models, these agents can autonomously conduct case investigations, gather background research, and even draft Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), creating a full audit trail for every decision made. Financial institutions implementing this technology have reported up to an 80% reduction in false positive alerts. Pioneering this shift, UK-based Griffin Bank recently launched its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server in a sandbox environment. This allows developers to build and test AI agents that can directly and autonomously perform banking tasks like opening accounts and initiating payments, a capability most existing bank infrastructures are not built to handle.
