Vertex Kidney Drug Shows Promise

Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced a Phase 3 success for povetacicept, a kidney disease drug, acquired via a $4.9 billion deal.

The drug, povetacicept, aims to treat APOL1-mediated kidney disease, which disproportionately affects individuals of African ancestry. Vertex acquired the drug as part of its acquisition of biotech company VBI in July 2023. The Phase 3 trial met its primary endpoint, showing a statistically significant reduction in proteinuria (protein in urine) in patients treated with povetacicept compared to placebo. Vertex plans to submit regulatory filings to the FDA and other global regulatory agencies based on these results. Success in this area could open up a significant market for Vertex, as APOL1-mediated kidney disease has limited treatment options. The $4.9 billion price tag for VBI reflects the high hopes Vertex has for this drug and its potential to address a critical unmet need.
