AI Startup World Labs Raises $1B

AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li's startup World Labs raised $1 billion in new funding, with Autodesk contributing $200 million to the round. The funding makes World Labs one of the best-capitalized startups in the AI sector as it pursues novel approaches to AI development. Seventeen U.S.-based AI startups have already secured $100 million or more in funding this year, reflecting sustained investor enthusiasm across AI applications from core models to robotics and healthcare.

- Fei-Fei Li, known as the "godmother of AI," is a professor at Stanford University and previously served as a Vice President at Google. Her work on the ImageNet project, a large-scale database of images, was a critical catalyst for the deep learning revolution. - The startup is developing "spatial intelligence" AI, also known as "world models," which can perceive, generate, and interact with 3D environments, unlike AI that only processes 2D data like text and flat images. Potential applications include robotics, augmented reality, and simulations. - World Labs has released its first product, "Marble," a multimodal world model that allows users to create persistent and high-fidelity 3D worlds from text, image, or video prompts. - While the company's latest valuation was not disclosed, it was reportedly in funding discussions at a valuation of approximately $5 billion. This new round brings its total funding to over $1.2 billion, following a previous raise of $230 million in 2024. - Other major investors in the $1 billion round included semiconductor giants Nvidia and AMD, as well as Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and Emerson Collective. - World Labs is one of three U.S. AI startups to have raised $1 billion or more in the first two months of 2026. The others include Anthropic, which raised a $30 billion round, and Elon Musk's xAI.
