Nick Cave Exhibition Opens at Smithsonian
The Smithsonian American Art Museum has opened *Nick Cave: Mammoth* on February 13, running through January 3, 2027. The exhibition showcases the renowned artist's large-scale, multimedia creations that explore themes of identity, movement, and social justice through his distinctive sculptural works.
- The artist, Nick Cave, first created his well-known "Soundsuits" in 1992 as a direct response to the police beating of Rodney King. These wearable sculptures are designed to conceal the wearer's race, gender, and class, thereby challenging viewers' biases. - This exhibition is the Smithsonian American Art Museum's largest-ever commission from a single artist and is considered Cave's most personal project to date. It draws on his childhood in Missouri, incorporating family history and craft traditions. - "Mammoth" transforms the museum galleries into a series of immersive spaces featuring a massive, 700-square-foot light table displaying thousands of found objects, including his grandmother's thimble collection. - The exhibition includes a four-wall video projection titled "Roam," which shows mammoths wandering through modern-day Chicago, and bronze sculptures that fuse casts of Cave's own body with natural forms like flowers and birds. - While many know him for his vibrant and whimsical creations, Cave's work consistently explores serious themes of racial injustice, gun violence, and identity. For example, his sculpture "TM 13" was a direct response to the killing of Trayvon Martin. - In addition to being a visual artist, Cave is a trained dancer, having studied with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and he serves as the director of the graduate fashion program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. - The exhibition is organized by Sarah Newman, the James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art, and will be accompanied by a richly illustrated catalog and a special performance in October 2026.
