Pleasanton student Rithvi Balajee has qualified for the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, sending the Tri-Valley back to the national stage for a second straight year. (patch.com) Patch reported this week that Balajee earned the berth after regional competition and will compete in Washington-area Bee events again after reaching nationals in 2025. Scripps lists Balajee among the national competitors under the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club in Danville. (patch.com) (spellingbee.com) Last year, Balajee finished tied for 89th place at the national bee, according to her Scripps results page. Patch also reported that she advanced to the semifinals during the 2025 competition in National Harbor, Maryland. (spellingbee.com) (patch.com) The repeat trip stands out because the Scripps National Spelling Bee is a layered competition that starts with school and regional bees before a small field reaches nationals. Scripps says national competitors advance through preliminaries, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals to contend for the Scripps Cup. (spellingbee.com) This year’s national competition is scheduled for May 26-28 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, according to Scripps. The 2025 bee marked the event’s 100th anniversary, and Scripps says the program began in 1925. (spellingbee.com 1) (spellingbee.com 2) Balajee is part of a recent run of strong Tri-Valley spelling results. Pleasanton Weekly reported that Balajee, Aiden Meng and Aren Lee all finished in the top 100 at the 2025 national bee, with all three representing the Tri-Valley. (pleasantonweekly.com) That local pipeline has extended beyond Pleasanton. Patch noted that San Ramon student Dhruv Subramanian reached the Scripps finals in 2023 after winning the same regional bee sponsored by the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club. (patch.com) For Balajee, the next stop is Bee Week in late May, with another chance to move deeper into the national rounds than she did a year ago. (spellingbee.com)
