Hong Kong drew 4.35 million visitors in March, and officials said Art Basel Hong Kong and other March events helped lift the total. (discoverhongkong.com) The Hong Kong Tourism Board said the March count was up 14 percent from a year earlier, and first-quarter arrivals reached 14.31 million, up 17 percent. Mainland Chinese visitors made up 11.08 million of the January-to-March total, while non-mainland visitors reached 3.23 million. (discoverhongkong.com) Non-mainland visitors accounted for 27 percent of March arrivals, and the tourism board said the higher international share was driven by art and culture events including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Central and ComplexCon Hong Kong. Long-haul arrivals rose 19 percent year on year in the first quarter to 994,574 as flight capacity improved and more cruise liners called at the city. (discoverhongkong.com) That event-led bump fits Hong Kong’s tourism plan for 2026. Financial Secretary Paul Chan said in the 2026-27 budget that the government would allocate HK$1.66 billion to the tourism board and scale up flagship events, festivals, conferences and exhibitions. (budget.gov.hk) The tourism board set the same priority in March, telling industry partners it would focus market spending on higher-value overnight travelers, strengthen trade partnerships and differentiate Hong Kong from rival destinations. At its annual tourism seminar on March 18, the board said it drew nearly 2,000 participants from airlines, hotels, retail, dining, cruise and meetings businesses. (discoverhongkong.com) Art Basel Hong Kong ran at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 27 to 29, with a preview on March 26. The fair said its 2026 edition hosted 240 galleries from 41 countries and territories, with more than half from Asia-Pacific. (artbasel.com) Art Central ran from March 25 to 29 at Central Harbourfront, giving Hong Kong a second major art fair in the same week. ComplexCon Hong Kong was held on March 21 and 22 at AsiaWorld-Expo, extending the run of large events across the month. (artcentralhongkong.com) (hk01.com) Officials are still watching risks outside Hong Kong. The tourism board said on April 15 that developments in the Middle East could bring volatility to travel demand in the coming months, even as March’s event calendar lifted arrivals. (scmp.com)
