Title II deadline webinar
Public colleges are under a fast-approaching April 2026 Title II compliance deadline and CAST is hosting a webinar today explaining what educators need to know. Oshyn urged institutions serving more than 50,000 users to act now and reminded smaller entities they have until 2027 but shouldn't delay remediation planning. (x.com) (x.com)
Public colleges and school systems are days away from a federal digital-accessibility deadline, and CAST is using an April 16 webinar to walk educators through what has to change. (cast.org) The webinar, “Meeting ADA Title II Requirements: What Educators Need to Know,” is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Eastern, online. CAST says the session is aimed at K-12 schools, districts, and public education institutions facing compliance dates in 2026 and 2027. (cast.org) The deadlines come from a U.S. Department of Justice final rule published April 24, 2024, under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The rule requires state and local government entities to make web content and mobile apps accessible under specific technical standards. (federalregister.gov) For public entities with a total population of 50,000 or more, compliance begins April 24, 2026. Public entities with fewer than 50,000 people, and special district governments, have until April 26, 2027. (ecfr.gov) The rule covers more than a home page. The Electronic Code of Federal Regulations says it applies to web content and mobile apps a public entity provides directly or through contracts, licensing, or other arrangements. (ecfr.gov) The technical target is Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, 2.1 Level A and Level AA. CAST tells educators its practical checklist starts with auditing digital assets, then prioritizing high-traffic resources, tightening vendor procurement, training staff, and publishing an accessibility statement. (ecfr.gov) (cast.org) CAST also tells schools that the population test is based on local census data, not student enrollment. That matters for public higher education systems and districts that may serve fewer students than the population figure that triggers the April 24, 2026 date. (cast.org) The Justice Department said the rule was meant to give public entities clearer standards for services already covered by Title II, including websites and apps used to pay fines, apply for benefits, renew identification, register to vote, file taxes, and access transit schedules. (federalregister.gov) (govinfo.gov) Private vendors are also pressing schools to move quickly. Oshyn, a digital agency that sells accessibility services, says the April 2026 deadline covers websites, mobile apps, password-protected portals, and third-party tools delivered through a public entity’s site. (oshyn.com) The calendar is now tight: the rule took effect on June 24, 2024, and the first compliance date is April 24, 2026. CAST’s message for educators on April 16 is less about whether the rule applies than how fast institutions can finish the audit-and-remediation work still left. (federalregister.gov) (cast.org)
