Midjourney V7 Focuses on Personalization
The V7 update for AI image generator Midjourney introduces significant advances in personalization and user control. Users can now fine-tune visual styles and create consistent brand signatures across campaigns. The release is part of a broader trend where AI models are seen as collaborators that "hire" humans for curation and brand nuance, supported by new tools like the Midjourney Prompt Builder for creating shareable prompt templates.
The V7 update, which became the default on June 17, 2025, moves beyond its predecessor V6 by offering significantly improved coherence and detail in complex subjects like hands and bodies. It also introduces workflow enhancements such as a "Draft Mode" that generates previews up to 10 times faster at half the cost, ideal for rapid concepting. A key feature for brand work is "Omni Reference" (`--oref`), which allows users to maintain character and object consistency across multiple images, a crucial step for creating coherent visual stories or campaigns. This works alongside a Style Personalization feature, which requires users to rank around 200 image pairs to train the model on their specific aesthetic preferences, tailoring future outputs. For creative teams, this version introduces more direct control and speed. A "Conversational Mode" allows for iterative changes to an image through text or voice commands. The interface now includes a more advanced image editor with features like layers and the ability to upload and edit specific parts of an image, streamlining the asset creation process. From a leadership perspective, these advancements align with the broader industry trend of leveraging generative AI for efficiency and hyper-personalization. Over 70% of CMOs are already using or testing generative AI, with personalization being the top use case. The ability to automate content creation allows teams to produce visuals at scale while freeing up human creatives to focus on strategy and ideation. Looking ahead, Midjourney founder David Holz has indicated a roadmap that includes a native 3D model capable of generating volumetric scenes (NeRFs) that users can navigate, moving from text-to-image to text-to-world. The company is also developing its own hardware, dubbed "The Orb," potentially to optimize the creation and rendering of these AI-generated 3D environments.
