LACMA Opens Call for Art & Technology Projects

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has announced its 2026 Art + Technology Lab Request for Proposals. The program invites artists to experiment with emerging technologies, providing funding and technical support for innovative projects at the intersection of creative practice and tech.

- The program is a revival of LACMA's original "Art and Technology" initiative, which ran from 1967 to 1971 and paired prominent artists like James Turrell and Andy Warhol with major technology corporations. - Grant recipients can receive up to $50,000 in funding, as well as in-kind support from a network of technology advisors. This advisory network includes innovators from Hyundai, Snap Inc., SpaceX, Google, the MIT Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative, and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. - Since its relaunch in 2013, the lab has supported 45 artist projects and organized over 121 public programs. Past funded projects have explored technologies such as augmented reality, blockchain, gaming, and rocket propulsion. - The deadline for the 2026 proposals is Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 11:59 pm PT. The selection of projects is made by the museum director along with curatorial and program staff. - Starting with the 2026 cycle, the program will shift to a new biennial structure, supporting cohorts of 3-5 artists selected through the open call. This new framework will also include a biennial symposium for works-in-progress and a "Demo Day" to showcase completed projects. - The primary corporate partner for the Art + Technology Lab is Hyundai Motor Company, which recently extended its partnership with LACMA through 2037 in the largest programmatic commitment from a corporate partner in the museum's history. Additional supporters for the 2026 cycle include Snap Inc. and Anthropic.
