San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park Band starts its 144th season on Sunday, April 26, with a free concert at the Spreckels Temple of Music. (goldengateparkband.org) The band’s 2026 season runs most Sundays at 1 p.m. through Sept. 27, with concerts usually ending around 2:30 or 2:45 p.m. and no intermission. (goldengateparkband.org) San Francisco Recreation and Parks says the band has presented free concerts in Golden Gate Park since 1882 and is one of the oldest professional concert bands in the United States. (sfrecpark.org) This year’s opening program is billed as a celebration of the band’s long history, with patriotic favorites, classics and works meant to show the range of the concert band tradition. (goldengateparkband.org) The 2026 lineup is built around themed afternoons instead of a single repeated program. The May 3 concert is tied to Polish music and dance, May 24 spotlights Armenian culture, and June 7 is a Pride program with San Francisco Drag Laureate Per Sia and performer Lambert Moss. (goldengateparkband.org) Recreation and Parks says the season also includes July 4 and Labor Day concerts, alongside the regular Sunday schedule in the Music Concourse. (sfrecpark.org) The park’s bandshell is itself part of the story. Recreation and Parks says the original bandstand was built in 1882, and the current structure, also called the Spreckels Temple of Music, was built in 1900 as a gift from Claus Spreckels. (sfrecpark.org) The broader concert calendar around the bandshell is also crowded in 2026. Recreation and Parks says Illuminate LIVE has already launched a separate season of more than 125 free performances through mid-November at the same venue. (sfrecpark.org) Another date is already on the calendar for band fans: the Friends of the Golden Gate Park Band say their free 2026 band festival will run June 13 and 14 at the same bandshell, with the Golden Gate Park Band scheduled for June 14. (friendsofggpband.org) For now, the season opens where the tradition started: free live music in the park, on a Sunday afternoon, under the bandshell that has hosted it for more than a century.
