YouTube Tests AI Shorts Remixing

YouTube is testing a new AI tool that lets creators remix other Shorts into new videos. The feature signals a growing trend toward AI-assisted, cross-platform remix culture, which could influence future features on Instagram and TikTok.

This new functionality is part of a broader suite of AI tools YouTube is rolling out for Shorts creators. One experimental feature, called "Extend with AI," allows users to select up to five seconds of an eligible Short and generate a brand new, extended scene using AI prompts. Another test feature, "Add object," enables the insertion of AI-generated items directly into a scene, allowing for quick visual gags or annotations without complex editing. The AI push also extends to audio with a feature called "Dream Track." This tool, powered by Google's DeepMind, lets a small group of creators generate 30-second soundtracks from text prompts, including options to create music with an AI-generated voice in the style of participating artists like John Legend, Sia, and T-Pain. This directly addresses a major pain point for small businesses: sourcing affordable, licensed music for social content. These tools are YouTube's answer to established remix features like TikTok's Stitch and Duet and Instagram's Reels Remix, which have become central to content trends and user engagement on those platforms. By integrating generative AI, YouTube is not just catching up but attempting to leapfrog the competition, moving from simple clip-stitching to generative video and audio alteration within the app. This signals a significant shift in user-generated content (UGC), blurring the lines between human creativity and AI assistance. For local businesses, this lowers the barrier to creating engaging, on-trend video content. A restaurant could "remix" a food blogger's Short by using AI to add a steaming effect to a dish or generate a custom, upbeat soundtrack for a promotional video. The rise of "AI-UGC" presents both an opportunity and a challenge for agencies. While tools like these can accelerate content production for clients, maintaining authenticity is crucial, as audiences are growing wary of overly polished or synthetic content. The most effective strategy will likely blend authentic, customer-shot UGC with AI-enhanced remixes for a varied and dynamic content calendar. As social platforms increasingly become search engines, leveraging these tools can also boost discoverability. All remixed Shorts automatically attribute the original creator, creating a chain of discovery that can lead new audiences back to a business's channel. For an agency, this means training clients not just to create, but to actively encourage and participate in the remixing of their content.
