Fintech Deals Target Mortgage and Payments

Recent M&A activity highlights digitization trends in specialized financial sectors. Tradeweb invested in MAXEX to expand digital access to the secondary mortgage market. In the payments sector, Pavilion announced its acquisition of DiTRONICS to increase its technological scale.

- The collaboration between Tradeweb and MAXEX aims to connect Tradeweb's network of over 3,000 clients with MAXEX's approximately 400 mortgage lenders. This initiative is designed to create a more centralized and transparent market for U.S. residential mortgage loans. - While financial terms of Tradeweb's investment were not disclosed, the deal included appointing Troy Dixon, a Managing Director at Tradeweb, to MAXEX's board. JPMorgan, which led a 2021 investment in MAXEX, also has a representative on the board. - MAXEX acts as a digital exchange and single clearinghouse for trading residential loans, which addresses long-standing fragmentation in the secondary mortgage market through standardized contracts and electronic execution. The platform has facilitated loan sales for over 250 private-label securitizations. - Since its launch in 2016, MAXEX has seen significant growth, surpassing $5 billion in lock trading volume by the end of 2019 and reaching over $20 billion in aggregate trade lock volume by mid-2021. - The acquisition of DiTRONICS by Pavilion Payments, for which financial terms were not released, is intended to expand Pavilion's technological capabilities in the gaming and casino sector. - DiTRONICS, founded in 1998, provides a range of cash-access services for the gaming industry, including ATMs, check cashing, cash advance services, and ticket redemption kiosks. The company processes billions of dollars in transactions annually. - Pavilion Payments, backed by private equity firm Parthenon Capital, focuses on providing omnichannel payment solutions for the gaming industry, including cashless options and iGaming technology. - This acquisition will broaden Pavilion's reach into new markets, including route, restricted, charitable, and historical horse racing (HHR) sectors.
