New Fiber Optic Tech for AI Unveiled at MWC
At MWC Barcelona, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) will unveil a new Hollow-Core Fibre (HCF) solution designed to advance optical connectivity for AI. The next-generation technology promises ultra-low latency, aiming to strengthen the global infrastructure required for advanced AI applications.
Hollow-core fibre transmits data approximately 50% faster than traditional solid-core cables because light travels through an air-filled core instead of glass. This fundamental difference results in a latency reduction of about 31-47%, a critical factor for the massive data processing and real-time decision-making required by AI workloads. For every kilometer, hollow-core fiber can reduce transit time by about 1.54 microseconds compared to standard fiber. This technology also boasts lower signal loss, with YOFC achieving a record-low attenuation of 0.05dB/km, outperforming conventional fibers. The enhanced performance of HCF allows data centers to be built up to 1.5 times farther apart without a drop in performance, significantly expanding the options for location based on factors like renewable energy availability and lower operational costs. This opens up roughly 2.25 times more potential geographic locations for new data center construction. In June 2024, YOFC, in partnership with China Mobile, launched the world's first 800G hollow-core fibre transmission test network. The company has also successfully manufactured single hollow-core fibers in lengths exceeding 20 kilometers, demonstrating the technology's readiness for large-scale deployment. YOFC's official launch event for its HCF solutions is scheduled for March 4th at MWC Barcelona. The company's focus on HCF is part of its broader "AI-2030" strategy, positioning itself as a key provider of the underlying infrastructure for next-generation artificial intelligence.
