Pasadena Officer Shot, Suspect Killed
A police officer in Pasadena was shot and a suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire. An investigation is underway to determine the events that led to the shooting.
The incident began around 7:30 p.m. Monday near the Sierra Madre Villa Metro A Line station with a 911 call about a man shot in the shoulder. Responding Pasadena police officers found the victim and then spotted a man matching the suspect's description. A foot pursuit followed for approximately three blocks northward from the station. Near the intersection of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Electronic Drive, an exchange of gunfire occurred between at least one officer and the suspect. The wounded officer, described as a senior member of the department and a field training officer, was transported to Huntington Hospital for surgery. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. A multi-agency investigation is now in motion, a process that could take months or even years to complete. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau will conduct the primary criminal investigation into the officer's use of force, a standard procedure for the Pasadena Police Department since 2014. Separately, the Pasadena Police Department's own robbery and homicide detectives will investigate the initial shooting of the victim at the Metro station. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent review to determine if the officer's use of force was legally justified. This is a standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings in the county. Past investigations in Pasadena have taken considerable time. For example, the District Attorney's report on the August 2020 fatal shooting of Anthony McClain was not released until about 19 months after the incident.
