Sam Altman: 'Old People's' Career Advice May No Longer Apply

In a video clip from IIT Delhi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman advised young people that the biggest mistake they can make is listening to older generations for career guidance. He argued that due to the transformative impact of AI, traditional career advice is unlikely to be as effective as it once was.

- Sam Altman's own career path was unconventional; he dropped out of Stanford University at 19 to co-found Loopt, a location-based social networking app. Loopt was acquired for $43.4 million in 2012. - During the same talk at IIT Delhi, Altman advised students to cultivate "agency," which he defined as the belief in one's own ability to make things happen. He also identified "resilience" as the single most important skill for students to build. - The concept of a linear career path with a five-year plan is increasingly considered outdated by other tech leaders as well. LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky has advised professionals to focus on short-term learning and gaining experience rather than long-range roadmaps. - A World Economic Forum report predicted that by 2025, AI would displace 75 million jobs globally but create 133 million new ones, resulting in a net gain of 58 million jobs. - Altman has previously emphasized the importance of risk-taking, stating, "My willingness to fail allows me to succeed." He noted that a willingness to pursue unpopular ideas can lead to greater success due to less competition. - At the 2024 World Government Summit, Altman advocated for a global oversight agency for AI, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to manage the risks of powerful AI systems. - Research suggests that AI will significantly augment the roles of early-career workers, with one survey finding that 77% of them believe AI will help them advance in their careers. - Traditional job application strategies are becoming less effective due to AI-driven hiring practices. Skills and adaptability are now considered as critical as formal degrees.
