OneShield Expands AI Underwriting Platform
Insurtech firm OneShield has expanded its AI Hub platform with an unnamed specialty insurance provider. The deal emphasizes the growing trend of carriers adopting AI-native strategies for core processes like underwriting and claims.
OneShield's AI Hub is designed as an "AI-native" layer that integrates with an insurer's existing core systems, avoiding a complete "rip-and-replace" overhaul. This strategy, emphasized by Chief Innovation Officer Doug Moore, allows carriers to add intelligent capabilities on top of their current infrastructure. The platform is core-agnostic, meaning it can work with data from any source, not just OneShield's own policy administration systems. CEO Tony Villa states the goal is to leverage OneShield's position in operational workflows to apply "agentic AI" in meaningful ways for product development and underwriting. Early use cases for the AI Hub include an agent that can parse and structure insurance regulatory (SERFF) filings in minutes instead of hours and tools for automated claims triage and intelligent policy summarization. The AI in the insurance market is projected to grow from $8.63 billion in 2025 to $59.50 billion by 2033. This growth is fueled by the technology's ability to increase efficiency and accuracy. Studies show AI-enabled underwriting can boost productivity by up to 40% and cut quote turnaround times by 30%. OneShield's platform supports over 90 lines of business and specifically targets specialty carriers with features for Excess & Surplus lines, including support for non-admitted carriers. Known specialty clients using OneShield's platforms include Hiscox, Allied World, and Upland Capital. The company faces competition from other major insurance core system providers like Guidewire, Majesco, and Duck Creek, who are also heavily investing in AI-powered underwriting and claims solutions. Guidewire promotes an "underwriter's co-pilot" using GenAI, while Majesco offers an "Intelligent Sales & Underwriting Workbench" with AI-driven recommendations. Duck Creek provides an AI-driven "Digital Underwriting Assistant" to simplify data analysis. OneShield's AI Hub is built for interoperability, using Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) standards. This design, according to Chief Innovation Officer Doug Moore, lays the foundation for a "collaborative, intelligent ecosystem" across carriers, MGAs, and third-party tools, rather than just automating isolated tasks. The recent deal with the unnamed Michigan-based specialty insurer is intended to power its "next-generation insurance operations" using the AI Hub. This move highlights a trend where insurers are adopting AI-native strategies to enhance core processes like underwriting and claims without replacing their foundational systems.
