LA County Firefighter Dies in Explosion

An L.A. County firefighter died this week following an explosion. The incident is currently under investigation, and officials have offered condolences to the firefighter's family and colleagues.

The fallen firefighter was Andrew Pontious, a 52-year-old, 19-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The incident occurred on June 14, 2024, at a rock quarry in Littlerock, near Palmdale, while crews were responding to a fire in a large front-end loader. An explosion occurred shortly after the crew arrived around 2:10 p.m., killing Pontious. A second firefighter sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The operator of the front-loader had escaped the vehicle before the fire grew and was not injured. The explosion was not of the vehicle's fuel source, but one of its nearly 7-foot-tall tires. According to a Fire Department analysis, the heat from the fire caused a chemical reaction and a buildup of flammable gases inside the tire, leading to a violent explosion that sent shrapnel-like debris the length of a football field. Fire officials admitted this type of explosive event from a large tire was a previously unknown risk to the department. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that he believed he would have taken the same actions as Pontious and also would have been killed, highlighting the unforeseen nature of the danger. The investigation into the initial cause of the vehicle fire is being conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's homicide and arson bureaus. Following the incident, fire departments across California were alerted to the potential for catastrophic tire explosions on large construction vehicles. Pontious was assigned to Fire Station 93 in Palmdale and was remembered by colleagues as a mentor, affectionately known as "Uncle." He is survived by his wife and stepdaughter. A report from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) revealed that a smaller tire on the same vehicle had exploded just four minutes before Pontious's crew arrived, but this information was not relayed to the responding firefighters. The report also noted that the quarry had a non-fatal days lost incident rate in 2023 that was significantly higher than the national average for similar mines.
