Carrefour and Vusion Partner on Large-Scale Smart Stores

Global grocery retailer Carrefour and Vusion, a provider of retail digitalization solutions, have announced a strategic partnership. The collaboration aims to implement 'smart store' technology across Carrefour's locations on a large scale, focusing on enhancing the in-store retail experience through digitalization.

- The partnership is a key component of the "Carrefour 2030" plan, which aims to digitize all Carrefour hypermarkets and supermarkets in France by 2030. The plan includes an investment of over €150 million for the duration of the project. - Vusion will implement a range of technologies including electronic shelf labels (ESLs), smart rails with Bluetooth connectivity for product geolocation, and AI-powered micro-cameras to monitor shelves for stock and pricing errors. This follows a successful pilot of Vusion's EdgeSense technology in a Carrefour hypermarket that began in June 2025. - The initiative is expected to enhance operational efficiency by automating low-value tasks, allowing employees to focus more on customer service. Carrefour anticipates the technology will help reduce out-of-stock situations by 20% through automatic detection. - This collaboration is part of Carrefour's broader digital strategy, which includes a €3 billion investment in digital initiatives between 2022 and 2026 with the goal of tripling its e-commerce gross merchandise value to €10 billion by 2026. - Vusion, formerly known as SES-imagotag, is a global leader in retail digitalization and has deployed its solutions in over 35,000 stores worldwide. This partnership with Carrefour marks a major expansion in the European market, following a large-scale deployment with Walmart in the United States. - As part of the agreement, Carrefour will join Vusion's International Advisory Board, and the two companies will establish a joint laboratory called the "Next Retail Experience Centre" to focus on AI-driven retail innovation. - The leadership driving this initiative includes Alexandre Bompard, Chairman and CEO of Carrefour, and Thierry Gadou, Chairman and CEO of Vusion. Bompard has been leading Carrefour since 2017, and Gadou has been CEO of Vusion since 2012.
