Midwest Hit by Deadly Tornado Outbreak

Michigan experienced its deadliest tornado day since 1980, with at least six fatalities reported across Michigan and Oklahoma. An EF-3 tornado was among the earliest and most powerful on record for the state. The Storm Prediction Center warns of further severe storms and tornadoes for the central U.S. this week, including parts of Illinois, Indiana, Texas, and Oklahoma.

The EF-3 tornado in Union City, Michigan, was the strongest to hit the state in nearly 50 years. With estimated peak winds of 160 mph, it's also the earliest EF-3 on record for Michigan. The previous record was March 15, 2012. The Midwest is experiencing a shift in tornado patterns, with activity increasing in states like Michigan, Ohio and others further east. This is due to factors like warmer Gulf of Mexico waters and shifting jet stream patterns. The traditional "Tornado Alley" states like Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska are still at risk, but the Southeast is also seeing a higher frequency of tornadoes. This early-season outbreak bucks historical trends. Typically, the northern Midwest doesn't see peak tornado activity until later in the spring. However, warmer winters and increased atmospheric moisture are creating year-round potential for severe weather. The economic impact of tornadoes can be significant. A 2025 Midwest tornado outbreak caused an estimated $9 to $11 billion in damages and economic losses. This includes insured and uninsured losses, property damage, job losses, and supply chain disruptions. Reconstruction costs for a similar outbreak were estimated at $16 billion. The storms developed as warm, moisture-rich air surged north from the Gulf and collided with a strong cold front moving across the central United States. This created an environment favorable for intense thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. Areas hit harder may experience increased wage growth in the long term, especially in rural counties. This is due to increased demand for labor in the construction and industrial sectors following the storms.
