Reston Native Breaks National Powerlifting Record
A Reston native just set a new national powerlifting record, highlighting the growing excitement in strength sports. The achievement reflects both individual dedication and the broader community's rising interest in competitive powerlifting.
The powerlifter, Danny Grigsby, shattered the all-time world record for the raw deadlift, pulling an astonishing 487.5 kilograms (1,074.5 pounds). This feat took place at the 2022 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) American Pro competition in Manassas, Virginia. Grigsby's record-breaking lift was achieved in the 125-kilogram weight class. Remarkably, this lift surpassed his own previous world record of 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) set earlier the same year, making him the first person to deadlift over 1,000 pounds raw in a full powerlifting meet. An active-duty U.S. Marine, Grigsby has been competing in powerlifting since 2013, when he was 19 years old. His deadlift has been his signature event from the beginning of his competitive career. The sport of powerlifting, which comprises the squat, bench press, and deadlift, has seen a significant rise in popularity. The number of competitors at national events has grown dramatically, with some competitions seeing a tenfold increase in participants over a decade. This growth is particularly strong in the "raw" category, where lifters do not use supportive equipment like bench shirts or squat suits.
