€100M in New Funding for AI and 6G Tech

At MWC Barcelona, the GSMA Foundry and the European Space Agency (ESA) announced new funding worth up to €100 million for startups in AI, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), and 6G. The initiative aims to accelerate development in next-generation communication and intelligence technologies.

This new funding is an extension of a partnership between the GSMA Foundry and the ESA that was formalized in 2024. The collaboration is designed to merge the mobile and satellite communication industries to fast-track the creation of hybrid networks. Previous joint initiatives have included up to €15 million in funding opportunities and access to ESA's 5G/6G Hub in the UK for network testing. The investment specifically targets four key areas: leveraging AI for managing satellite and terrestrial network traffic (AI x NTN), supporting pilots for direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, establishing collaborative 5G/6G testbeds, and innovating early-stage 6G technologies. The ultimate goal is to achieve seamless global connectivity by integrating satellites with ground-based infrastructure. Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) are a critical component of this initiative, aiming to provide 'always-on' coverage in regions where terrestrial networks are not economically viable. The market for 6G and NTN is projected to exceed $9.66 billion in 2026. This push for integrating satellite capabilities directly into consumer devices is expected to significantly improve connectivity for emergency services and communities in areas that are currently unconnected, a gap affecting around 400 million people globally. For AI, the applications within this initiative are extensive, ranging from orchestrating network traffic to automating satellite manufacturing and processing vast amounts of imaging data. ESA has identified AI as a foundational element for the future of 6G, enabling intelligent and self-optimizing networks. This includes using AI for real-time data analysis, which can enhance everything from weather forecasting to optimizing rocket navigation.
