Cyprus Gets Travel Warning Over Iran Conflict

The U.S. State Department raised its travel advisory for Cyprus to Level 3 ("reconsider travel") due to escalating Iran conflict tensions. The warning follows a recent drone strike on a British base on the island and highlights potential security risks tied to U.S.-Israel-Iran hostilities affecting the popular European destination.

The drone that struck the British Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri on March 2 was an Iranian-made "Shahed" type, according to Cypriot officials. While the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed the drone was not launched from Iran itself, Cypriot authorities believe it was fired from Lebanon by Hezbollah. The targeted RAF Akrotiri is a key strategic asset for the United Kingdom and its allies in the Eastern Mediterranean. The base is part of a Sovereign Base Area (SBA), which is British territory, retained since Cyprus's independence in 1960 to serve as a crucial staging post for military operations in the Middle East. Following the attack, the U.S. State Department not only raised the travel alert but also authorized the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members from Cyprus on March 3, 2026, due to the security risks. The Level 3 advisory also highlights a long-standing issue: the U.S. government's limited ability to provide emergency services to its citizens in the northern part of Cyprus. This area has been administered by Turkish Cypriots since 1974, a government the U.S. and all countries other than Turkey do not recognize. This is not the first Iran-linked security concern on the island. In recent years, Cypriot and Israeli intelligence have foiled several alleged Iranian plots to attack Israeli businesspeople and other Jewish targets in Cyprus. The travel warning has caused a noticeable slowdown in hotel bookings, prompting concern within the island's vital tourism sector. In response, the Cypriot government has stated it is preparing to formally challenge the U.S. advisory.
