Axel Springer Buys Bisnow

German media giant Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a major commercial real estate media and events company. The deal, backed by private equity firm The Wicks Group, signals continued consolidation in the B2B media landscape.

This acquisition is the second major ownership change for Bisnow, which was bought by private equity firm The Wicks Group for an estimated $50 million in 2016. Prior to that, the company, founded in 2005 by Mark Bisnow, had grown from a local Washington, D.C. newsletter into a major commercial real estate news and events platform. Bisnow's business model combines digital media with a significant events component, hosting hundreds of gatherings annually that draw tens of thousands of attendees. In 2013, the company's revenue was reported at nearly $14 million, with roughly two-thirds generated from event ticket sales and sponsorships. By 2023, its estimated annual revenue had grown to $54.3 million. The buyer, Axel Springer, is a German media conglomerate with a substantial and growing presence in the U.S. market. The company has pursued a "digital first, digital only" acquisition strategy, notably purchasing Business Insider in a deal that valued the company at $442 million in 2015 and acquiring Politico for over $1 billion in 2021. Axel Springer's portfolio is divided into news, classifieds, and marketing media. The company owns major European newspapers like Bild and Die Welt, alongside its growing collection of English-language digital brands. This acquisition of Bisnow adds a specialized B2B real estate information and events platform to its diverse holdings.
