Orangetheory Fitness Announces Major Japan Expansion

Purpose Brands announced plans for a significant expansion of Orangetheory Fitness in Japan. The master franchisor, Orangetheory Japan Co., Ltd., signed a 10-year renewal agreement with the goal of expanding the brand's presence to 100 studios.

This expansion is happening in a Japanese fitness market that was worth approximately 320 billion yen in 2022. The boutique studio sector, Orangetheory's niche, is a significant part of this, valued at 45 billion yen. There's a growing demand for personalized and tech-driven fitness in Japan, which aligns with Orangetheory's model. The core of Orangetheory's workout is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) grounded in exercise physiology. The sessions are designed to create "Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption" (EPOC), a state where the body continues to burn calories even after the workout is over. This scientific foundation is a key part of the brand's appeal. Each member wears a heart-rate monitor, like the OTbeat system, to track their real-time biometric data. This data is displayed on screens in the studio, showing which of the five heart-rate zones the person is in. The goal is to spend 12 to 20 minutes in the "Orange Zone," which is 84-91% of an individual's maximum heart rate, to maximize the EPOC effect.
