Contractor Mobilizes for Ghana Road Projects
Oswald Investments Ltd., a construction company in Ghana, is reportedly mobilizing equipment and personnel to begin work on the government's "Big Push" initiative. The program is focused on a nationwide agenda of road construction and infrastructure improvements.
The "Big Push" initiative represents one of the largest investments in Ghana's road sector, with work commencing on 50 major projects covering 1,144 kilometers at an estimated cost of GHS 50 billion. In addition to new construction, the government is also completing 23 previously underfunded projects spanning 573 kilometers. Key projects include the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, the Sunyani Outer Ring Road, and the dualization of the Winneba-Cape Coast Road. This major infrastructure drive addresses a significant need; as of 2021, only 27% of Ghana's 94,203 km total road network was paved. While the country's road transport indicators are strong for its income level, with 75% of the paved network in good or fair condition, a significant gap remains in rural connectivity. An estimated 76% of Ghana's rural population lives more than two kilometers from an all-season road. Oswal Investments Ltd., a wholly Ghanaian-owned firm founded in 2002, has grown from road maintenance to become a major player in the country's construction industry. The company has previously handled high-profile projects, including the first flyover constructed by a Ghanaian company at Adjirigano and the dualization of the Dodowa-Adenta road in Accra. The initiative is part of a continent-wide boom in construction, with Africa's construction market valued at approximately USD 220-240 billion and projected to grow significantly. This growth is fueled by rapid urbanization, government infrastructure spending, and foreign direct investment. Key trends shaping the industry include a growing focus on sustainable building practices and the integration of technology like Building Information Modelling (BIM). For business graduates, entry into construction management often begins in roles like Assistant Project Manager or Project Engineer. These positions leverage core business skills that are highly transferable to the construction industry. Skills such as budgeting, cost control, scheduling, and contract management are fundamental to construction project management and directly align with business school curricula. Strong communication, team leadership, and negotiation abilities are also critical for coordinating with diverse stakeholders, from clients and architects to on-site crews.
