Bathroom remodels pricier

Bathroom remodel costs are projected to jump 15%–20% in 2026, creating a noticeably higher budget baseline for spring renovation plans (depohomes.com). The analysis attributes the rise to multiple pricing pressures that will make contingency funds more important for projects starting this year (depohomes.com).

Bathroom remodels are getting more expensive in 2026, with one new analysis putting the jump at 15% to 20% for projects starting this year. (depohomes.com) Depo Homes said a typical mid-range bathroom renovation now runs about $20,000, while projects with heated floors, frameless glass showers and custom cabinetry can reach roughly $35,000. The firm said standard ceramic tile prices are up about 15% and quartz countertops nearly 20% from the prior period. (depohomes.com) The cost pressure is not coming from one line item. The National Association of Home Builders said residential construction material prices accelerated after the start of 2024, with softwood lumber, steel, aluminum and imported equipment all adding volatility to project budgets. (nahb.org) Labor is adding another layer. A Home Builders Institute and National Association of Home Builders report said the industry needs about 723,000 construction hires a year, while average hourly wages in construction rose 5% over the last year. (hbi.org) Bathroom work is also still a live part of the remodeling market, even with higher borrowing costs. Houzz said more than half of homeowners renovated in 2024, and median spending on major remodels of small primary bathrooms rose 13% to $17,000. (houzz.com) A separate 2025 Houzz bathroom study found the national median spend on bathroom renovations eased to $13,000 in 2024, but major remodels still edged up to $22,000 from $21,000 a year earlier. Larger bathrooms of 100 square feet or more held at a median of $25,000. (st.hzcdn.com) That helps explain why a 2026 price jump lands differently than a routine annual increase. Homeowners were already paying five-figure sums for major bathroom work before this year’s added material and labor pressure showed up in contractor quotes. (st.hzcdn.com; depohomes.com) The remodeling business itself has not rolled over. The National Association of Home Builders said its Remodeling Market Index was 62 in the first quarter of 2026, down two points from the prior quarter but still in positive territory. (eyeonhousing.org) Homeowners are also still spending for function, not just resale. Houzz said 68% of bathroom renovators consider special needs in their projects, 36% add wellness features, and 84% hire professionals. (st.hzcdn.com) For spring and summer projects, the immediate effect is simple: the old bathroom budget is probably too low. Contractors, fixtures and finishes are all competing for a bigger share of the same remodel. (depohomes.com; nahb.org)
