Sinners Oscar Journey

The film "Sinners" completed an 11-month journey to the 2026 Academy Awards, standing out for its critical and commercial momentum. The 2026 Oscar race is shaping up to be highly competitive. "Sinners" is drawing particular attention from industry watchers.

"Sinners" is a genre-bending supernatural horror film from writer-director Ryan Coogler. Set in the Jim Crow-era Mississippi Delta in 1932, the plot follows twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, who establish a juke joint that comes under siege by vampires. The film explores the folklore of blues music and the appropriation of Black art. The movie proved to be a major commercial success, grossing over $369 million worldwide on a budget of roughly $90-100 million. It became the highest-grossing original live-action film in the U.S. since 2013's "Gravity" and broke multiple box office records for an R-rated horror movie. The film made Academy Awards history by securing a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film. This surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by "All About Eve," "Titanic," and "La La Land." Key nominations for "Sinners" include Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku, and Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo. The film was also nominated in the inaugural category for Best Casting. Prior to the Oscar nominations, "Sinners" built significant awards momentum. It garnered 17 nominations at the Critics' Choice Awards and 13 at the British Academy Film Awards. The film also won two Golden Globe Awards, including for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The 2026 Best Picture race features strong competition. Among the other nine nominees are Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another," ChloƩ Zhao's "Hamnet," and Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein."
